Barona Oaks Raceway was founded in 1973. During 1970's and 80's, numerous professional Motocross riders grew up riding nearby who later went on to historic careers in professional Motocross, including Ron Lechein and Rick Johnson from El Cajon CA. (dubbed 'The Cajon Zone' by the So-Cal Motocross industry).

Located on the Barona Indian Reservation on Wild Cat Canyon Road in San Diego County, Barona Oaks Raceway has continually come under fire from local residents who bought new homes next to the raceway many years after the Motocross track had been in operation. Nearby neighborhoods have been petitioned for signatures, but since the Barona Indian tribe controls the land and could probably care less about the newcomer residents, the track remains as the only public Motocross track currently operating in San Diego county.
